Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his immediate retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket and shocked the world , opting to focus on T20 formats. This decision comes shortly after his inclusion in Australia’s squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to commence on February 22, 2025, in Pakistan.
Stoinis’s retirement at the age of 35, adds to Australia’s selection challenges, as fellow all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has withdrawn from the tournament due to a lower back injury, and captain Pat Cummins is uncertain to participate because of an ankle issue.
Besides Stoinis, three other major names are ruled out of champion trophy 2025 due to injuries. However big changes are required to Australian cricket team in order to lift the CT 2025.
Reflecting on his ODI career, Stoinis expressed gratitude for representing Australia, stating, “It was a difficult decision, but I feel it’s the right time to focus on the next phase of my career.” He has been a significant contributor to the team, featuring in 74 ODIs, including two World Cups, and achieving a memorable century against New Zealand in 2017.
Australian coach and selector Andrew McDonald praised Stoinis’s contributions, highlighting his leadership and impact over the past decade. The selectors now face the task of identifying suitable replacements to finalize the squad ahead of the Champions Trophy.
